10+ Weeks of Water Aerobics Aids Weight Loss in Overweight and Obese Individuals

A recent meta-analysis found that participating in water aerobics for more than 10 weeks can help reduce waist size and support weight loss in adults who are overweight or obese.

While researchers did not find a direct link between water aerobics and reductions in body mass index (BMI) or body fat percentage, the study did show significant decreases in body weight and waist circumference.

The study included various types of water aerobics, such as Aqua Zumba, water yoga, aqua jogging, and aqua aerobics. Participants typically exercised two to three times per week, with each session lasting about an hour.

The findings demonstrated notable reductions in body weight and waist circumference among individuals with overweight or obesity. While participation in the study ranged from 6 to 12 weeks, those who engaged in water aerobics for more than 10 weeks saw the greatest weight loss results. Women aged 45 and older, in particular, experienced significant reductions in both weight and waist circumference.

Additionally, the study highlighted the growing popularity of water aerobics among individuals with obesity. The buoyancy of water helps reduce joint pain and minimizes the risk of injuries often associated with high-impact exercises, making it a more accessible and sustainable workout option.

In the Cayman Islands, we are fortunate to have access to various bodies of water, along with a wide range of water aerobics classes.
