Rising Paediatric Flu Cases: Precautions for Parents

Influenza, more commonly referred to as the “flu,” is caused by the influenza virus. It is a contagious illness, easily spread through coughing, sneezing, or nasal secretions/discharge.

Symptoms

There are several common symptoms of the paediatric flu (flu in children). While it is a respiratory virus, there is an array of symptoms that can impact the entire body. These include:

  • Fever (normally above 100.4°F or 38°C)
  • Sore throat
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Coughing (which may worsen overtime)
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Runny nose
  • Some children may also experience periods of vomiting and diarrhea.

The influenza virus has two different types: A and B, which are linked to causing the seasonal outbreak, “flu season,” each year.

Across the world, we are seeing quite an active flu season. The flu can impact people of all ages; however, young children (ages 5 and younger, especially those under the age of 2) are particularly more likely to contract it, including severe cases. Mild cases of the paediatric flu may last only a few days to a week, but severe cases can lead to complications that might result in hospitalisation or death due to influenza-related illnesses.

Therefore, it is vital to be aware of the symptoms above and take the necessary steps to protect you and your child, with one of the most important being the annual influenza vaccination.

Flu Vaccine Schedule in Cayman

The Cayman Islands Public Health Department recommends individuals receive their seasonal flu vaccine as it becomes available each year. Getting vaccinated before December is the optimal time to ensure protective antibodies are in your system before the peak of the flu season, as the vaccine can take about two weeks to provide full protection.

Children can receive their first flu vaccine at 6 months or older. Public Health notes that when receiving the vaccination for the first time, children need a second dose 4 weeks later to be fully protected from the virus.

It is crucial to be prepared well in advance of the season to ensure your family stays safe and healthy. Flu vaccines are available at all public healthcare facilities in the Cayman Islands and most private healthcare facilities.
