Lions Eye Clinic Welcomes New HSA Physician

Consultant Ophthalmologist Ermanno Scerrati has been recruited by the Health Services Authority (HSA) to oversee the advancements in eye treatments soon to be available at the Lions Eye Clinic. Dr. Scerrati joins the HSA team in order to lead the eye clinic towards a more technologically advanced vision for eye care in the Cayman Islands.

Dr. Sceratti, who is Italian, is an expert in the treatment of glaucoma as well as issues impacting the cornea. He has extensive experience and knowledge about Vitro Retinal Surgery, Cornea Transplant, and Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS). He brings over eight years of experience with corneal surgery and six years of experience with glaucoma surgery to the Lions Eye Clinic. Dr. Sceratti is the only physician in the Cayman Islands who has performed the MIGS surgical procedure for glaucoma.

Recently, Dr. Sceratti performed four MIGS procedures, which involves the use of the world’s smallest medical device: the iStent. The patients who underwent this treatment were the first on the Cayman Islands to receive the iStent implants as a treatment for glaucoma.

A slow but gradual loss of vision characterizes glaucoma, as fluids build up, putting pressure on the eye. In patients who have mild or moderate cases of open-angle glaucoma, the placement of the iStent during MIGS procedures reduces the problem-causing pressure.

Before Dr. Sceratti moved to the Cayman Islands, he was the head of the glaucoma unit at the Wye Valley Trust NHS Hospital in Hereford (UK). Dr. Sceratti was the first doctor in the Midlands region of the UK to perform the MIGS procedure, and his knowledge and experience will enable the Lions Eye Clinic to advance even further in the treatment of traumatic eye injuries that affect patients in the Cayman Islands.

While studying medicine at “La Sapienza,” at the University of Rome, Dr. Scerrati chose to pursue a specialisation in ophthalmology. He received training in eye surgery at some of the top specialist eye clinics in Italy, and this training gave him the foundation to become a leader in the field. Dr. Scerrati specialises in eye surgeries for cataracts, refractive errors, and glaucoma.

Prior to his experience in the UK, Dr. Sceratti worked in varied locations such as Spain, Tanzania, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Kuwait, and Azerbaijan.
