The Health Services Authority (HSA) recently announced that George Town Hospital has been renamed to Anthony S. Eden Hospital, in recognition of the Honourable Anthony Eden, OBE, JP (Ret), and his significant contributions to healthcare in the Cayman Islands.

The renaming commemorates Mr. Eden’s key role in shaping the modern healthcare system in the Cayman Islands. Mr. Eden served as Minister of Health from 1994 to 2000 and again from 2005 to 2009. During his leadership, the HSA notes, he championed key reforms and initiatives that significantly enhanced the quality, accessibility, and delivery of healthcare across the nation.

Among his achievements were the completion of the Cayman Islands Hospital in 1999, the expansion of district health centres to better serve local communities, and the introduction of mandatory health insurance.

He also played a pivotal role in modernising healthcare legislation, including reforms to the Health Practitioners Bill, as well as in the development of the National Strategic Plan for Drug Abuse Prevention and Rehabilitation, which led to the establishment of Caribbean Haven in Breakers. Additionally, Mr Eden introduced the National Strategic Health Plan and fostered partnerships with international medical institutions to broaden access to tertiary care.

Premier and Minister of Health, Hon. Julianna O’Connor-Connolly, who attended the unveiling of the hospital’s new signage bearing Mr Eden’s name, shared her reflections on his legacy:
“We honour the legacy and contribution of Mr Eden, whose vision, dedication and sacrifice have been truly transformative.”

Also quoted in the news article from HSA was HSA Chief Executive Officer, Lizzette Yearwood, who said:
“The naming of the hospital in Mr Eden’s honour reflects the profound and lasting impact he has made on healthcare in the Cayman Islands, championing access to cutting-edge, advanced care through effective stewardship. We are, indeed, happy that he is here today to witness the celebration of his legacy. The team at the HSA remains committed to providing high-quality, accessible healthcare, and ensuring that the experiences of our patients continue to embody Mr Eden’s vision and compassion.”

In his own remarks, Mr Eden expressed deep gratitude for the recognition:
“It is indeed an honour to have served my country and to have played a role in the establishment and advancement of this vital sector. I am grateful for the recognition bestowed upon me, as it not only reflects the journey we have undertaken but also underscores the spirit of community, where we can all play a part in taking care of each other.”
