Doctor Sued by Treasury for Bounced Cheque

Dr Awardnath [Howard] Deosaran, a prominent local obstetrician and gynaecologist, as well as medical director, at the Centre for Women, Family & Child Health is being sued by the Attorney General of the Cayman Islands, on behalf of the Treasury Department.

Court papers state that Dr Deosaran owes $8,690 from an original cheque for CI $13,650 that was dishonoured, along with a CI $40 administration charge. Additionally, the papers explain that demands had been presented and attempts made to encourage Dr Deosaran to enter an arrangement to pay, all of which had failed, now finally resulting in this action.

Whereas it is clear from the papers that the original cheque was for work permit fees, the amount corresponding to to those fees paid by a doctor, no reference is made as to whether the individual in question lost their work permit, which is typically what might happen if fees went unpaid for a considerable time, and if that happened, whether the indvidual continued to work without their permit. Work permit notifications are sent to the employer and so an individual employee wouldn’t necessarily know.

Dr Deosaran is presented with an opportunity to respond to the papers. If the matter remains unresolved, Summary Court will award in favour of the Attorney General.

Doctors across the world are held to very high standards of ethics and probity due to their unique role in helping individuals at what can be some of their most vulnerable times. Notwithstanding that a doctor could well have been working without a paid up work permit, the papers cite promises to pay that were not honoured, confirming that the incident is more than just an administrative oversight.
