The Cayman Islands Celebrates Pharmacy Week 2020

The Cayman Pharmacists Association (CPA) and the Health Services Authority (HSA) are teaming up to celebrate Pharmacy Week 2020 during the week of September 20-26. The theme of this year’s Pharmacy Week is “Transforming Global Health,” which is also the theme of World Pharmacists Day, which will take place on Friday 25 September.

Support & Self-Care

In celebration of this year’s Pharmacy Week, Caymanian pharmacists are launching a new initiative that offers additional resources to individuals with chronic illnesses. This initiative supports self-care here in the Cayman Islands and seeks to provide more educational information and support to patients whose chronic conditions require regular health checks.

By providing patients with chronic illnesses with new tools, education, and extra support, pharmacists in the Cayman Islands will be able to help individuals with chronic conditions improve their general health and enjoy a higher quality of day-to-day life. These additional resources are not intended to take the place of medical appointments, but to supplement them.

The CPA’s new self-care program for Caymanians with chronic health conditions will empower members of the Cayman population to transform their own health, thereby contributing to the health of the wider community and the world at large.

Brown Bag Medication Review

As well, on World Pharmacists Day, pharmacists across the Cayman Islands are inviting  individuals who take prescription medications, supplements, and other pharmaceuticals to participate in a Brown Bag Medication Review. The Cayman Islands Hospital Main Pharmacy and North Side Clinic Pharmacy are two of many pharmacies which will be meeting with participants on Friday, 25 September from 10am to 1pm.

During the Brown Bag reviews, pharmacists will check the contents of each individual’s bag of medications. Pharmacists will discuss the medications and supplements with each individual to ensure that the medications are being taken properly. The in-person reviews will also enable pharmacists to address errors in medication use and advise patients as to how to avoid such mistakes in the future.

Other celebrations of Pharmacy Week taking place in the Cayman Islands include educational sessions, radio interviews, church services, and a meeting of the journal club. All of these events recognize Cayman pharmacists whose care and effort ensure that all patients are living as healthfully as possible.
